Assiment 2 by Whi Yeon Cho(Daniel)

The Cog Hill Country club & Golf is a private membership organization that located at 12294 Archer Avenue Lemont, IL. It was first found by three brothers, John W., Martin J., and Bert Coghill. In early twenties, the brothers went to a golf outing sponsored by the electrical union at Oak Hills, which they worked as an electrician. Even though none of them played golf, they thought the game looked like fun, was easy, and they were satisfied. This event decided the brothers to search for a place to build a golf course in their hometown 28 miles Southwest of Chicago to Lemont and bought part of Lemont where the change in elevation between the floor of the valley and the hills of Cog Hill are striking contrast to the plains of Illinois.

Now day’s current issues about The Cog Hill is HOT!! The Cog Hill was holding BMW Championship in yearly basis (This year’s golf season start Sept. 7th to Sept. 13th). However, due to the renovation on Dubsbread where the championship occurs, it did not happen. It disappointed many people and Cog Hill CC had hard time with $5 million dollar renovation project. This year it finally reopens the Dubsbread on May.15.2009 to the public and is holding Championship again. There is an issue about renovated course due to the length of the course, but it seems like they are still having the championship. (“Two of the pars 5s are longer than 600 yards. One of the par 4s is more than 500 yards long. Par 3s that once could be reached with an 8- or 9-iron now requires a 3-iron”: http://www.pgatour.com/2009/tournaments/r028/09/09/mcallister_column/index.html)
There are more about this championship. There are some services are waiting for you if you arrive at Cog Hill with BMW cars. You will be given good parking lot and also a free car wash. This season already started, but it is not late for you to join this event.

There are many more events and places other than BMW Championship in this country club. Sure golf is a major attraction, but this club offers you more than that such as main club. It is one of the best places of Cog Hill Country Club. It provides member a place for wedding, large group meeting, baby shower, bridal shower, and funeral. It has tennis courts and also pools.

I have interview Patrick Melville, who worked in Cog Hill on summer for 4 month, about benefits as a worker. “There are many benefit as a part-time employee” Patrick said. As a worker he gets free golf tee, driving range and also 10% discounts on pro-shop items. This was not just it. It offered him to learn skills needed to be a waiter such as carrying plates as many as you can, how to set a table, and interestingly how to drive a golf cart. He also had a chance to learn golf that he never interested in and how to communicate with other. These skills maybe useless in the world, but he explains “It is fun and also a good start to get involved in the club because this country club hires people by how trustful you are. In order to get job opportunities in the Cog Hill Country Club one must be confirmed by a manager or higher. Because Patrick’s best friend’s mom is a manager, Patrick was able work for private organization.
I asked Patrick as a local citizen about how he feels about this club. His answers were positive. “I think it brings prestige to our town. People will remember our town as a unique, extraordinary community where BMW Championship occurs or where it has wonderful golf courses” said Patrick. As country club exists it brings tremendous advantages towards the community such as economically. As an example, during Great Depression because many people who have money came to play golf the economics of the city could survive during the depression. It also creates a distinct job opportunity to help high school students and also college students (usually high school student. 11/15 of workers were high school students, Patrick worked there).

My very last question to Patrick was:”How do you define leisure? And did you enjoy your job?” He defined leisure as “a free time when one can purely enjoy their lives. For him swimming, weight training, soccer, basket ball, and working are the best way to spend his leisure. He later explains that he find intrinsic value and leisure touches similar place. Like many other definition of leisure matched with recreational theory..

Synopsis:
I found that it was very valuable time for me to discover the field of recreation little more. It is unfortunately I could not reach to manager or Frank Jemsek, the owner of the club, but as I interview and research about the club I did feel attraction. There are many pros that I can think of, but if I have to pick one I will pick, opportunities speak with other. This is a private club where there are hard restrictions to access membership, but once one has an access to the club there is bigger opportunity for me to find better job using skills learned from the Club. I barely find any cons, but I think once one just started to work it would be hard for me to endure stress and would disappointed by the works that are given, due to my expectations of this work.
